Join artist Jin Heewoong on December 13th for a presentation of his SIGHTINGS project, I am no longer waves, followed by a discussion with artist Alli Melanson and Max Stern Curator of Research, Julia Eilers Smith.

Heewoong will reconstruct the narrative behind his project, anchored in a generic image that Melanson discovered in a store-bought frame and later handed over to Heewoong. The discussion among the three participants will focus on various themes explored in the installation, ranging from AI-generated dialogues and the use of stock photos to the perceptual and psychological experience of the horizon. Their exchange will also reflect on the large signs installed on the roof of the cube and their impact on passersby in the Hall Building.

Jin Heewoong, a Korean artist residing in Montreal, navigates the spectrum of visibility in the ordinary. Working with found objects and everyday materials, he creates sculptures, installations, and narrative-driven videos that unravel the intricate hues of displacement and belongingness. Integrating personal text and footage, his works transform the mundane into a symphonic arrangement of objects, inviting viewers to explore the concealed layers of our own experience. Jin’s works have been exhibited at MAI (CAN, 2023), Maison de la culture Janine-Sutto (CAN, 2022), Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery (CAN, 2022), Peripheral Hours (CAN, 2019), Cheongju International Craft Biennale (KOR, 2017), Real DMZ project, and Art Sonje Center (KOR, 2015). He co-founded Quite Ourselves, a collective promoting independence, experimentation, and ‘sustainable mobility’ for minority artists in Mooniyang/Tiohtià:ke/Montreal.

Alli Melanson lives and works in Tiohtià:ke (Montréal). She holds an MFA from Concordia University and a BFA from OCAD University. In 2023, she presented solo exhibitions at Joe Project, Chris Andrews and 100 Bell Towers, and was included in group shows at Franz Kaka and the Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery.
