Lebanon: space exploration pioneer? The film’s title is the name of the real life Lebanese space program founded in the 1960s. Artists Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige, who directed Catherine Deneuve in I Want to See, unearthed everything they could find about this forgotten history. There would have been a fascinating film in a simple historical investigation based on rare archival footage and interviews with key players. This film is much more: the directors built a model of one of the original rockets, and this becomes the centrepiece of an artistic performance featured in the film. The elegant object, exhibited throughout Lebanon, embodies both the pan-Arab dream and the fear of war, past and present.
